Two international research cruises on board of the research vessel 'Ichthys' the first one in Aug-Sept 1971, and the second other in June-July 1972, have shown the reproduction of Thunnus thynnus, T.alalunga, Auxis thazard and Sarda in the surroundings of the Balearic Islands. The observations were made on the planctonic stages of these spp and on the physico-chemical and biological conditions of the environment. Some data were also collected on the presence of juvenile or mature stages of these fishes and on their fishery. |

In the deepest parts of the estuarine region of Ebrie Lagoon (Abidjan Africa, (5 degree N, 4 degree W) stratified conditions have been observed during the rainy season (May to Nov.), owing to salinity differences between oxic and anoxic layers. At the interface, 3-4 m depth, phototrophic bacteria (Chromatium, Chlorobium and Pelodictyon ) developed, forming a brown layer due to their different pigments. Their production has been estimated at 41% of the total photosynthetic production during high stratification (Sep. 1981) and their biomass was used by the copepod population for 40 to 60% of its diet. During the dry season, the water column became homogeneous and oxygen was detected to 6m depth. The brown layer of phototrophic bacteria disappeared, as well... |

This document is the third volume of a bibliographical survey of some of the species studied by IFREMER Brest's Coastal Environment Department (DEL) on a regular basis. The studied animals are a selection of characteristic community species (ex: Lanice or Abra) or populations whose density is so large that they are the ideal material for a regular pluri-annual study (ex: Nucule). For some of them, a regular geographical distribution along the Channel coasts, can be another reason for their selection. On the one hand, for some species, which can be easily reached on the tidal zone, works are numerous and documentation heavy, especially in the ethology field (building of tube of Lanice, displacement of Patelle) On the other hand, documentation, if any, is... |

It is often necessary to sub-sample plankton samples even if the precision of the estimation is thereby decreased. A methodological optimization is looked for. The variance depends on the procedure of construction of the aliquot (strategy) and the number of individuals counted (effort). The sub-sampling effort is allocated in a general context of repartition of the total effort between sampling and sub-sampling. This effort depends on the time consumed by the sub-sampling procedure, the volume of the aliquot and the number of individuals counted. For the same effort, a systematic procedure for the construction of sub-samples is more precise than a random one because it travels through the entire sample and is thus less dependent on the spatial distribution... |
